Ingredients
- Strawberries: Use fresh and firm strawberries that are at room temperature. Avoid using strawberries that are soft since the juices will leak through the chocolate coating.
- Milk chocolate: I use milk chocolate chips, but a bar of milk chocolate or baking chocolate will work perfectly.
- White chocolate: You can skip white chocolate chips if you don’t want to drizzle it over the hardened chocolate coating. But if you choose to use it, find good quality white chocolate chips or a white chocolate bar.
- Coconut oil: Since this recipe calls for chocolate chips, adding a little coconut oil helps thin out the chocolate and also creates a shiny chocolate coating. Alternatively, you can substitute the coconut oil for canola oil.
- Shredded coconut: I prefer using unsweetened shredded coconut to help balance out the flavours and not have an overly sweet strawberry.
- Chopped pistachio: Adds a sweet and salty touch.
Step-by-step Instructions To Making Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Step 1: Strawberry preparation (wash, dry and pierce toothpicks into strawberries). Let the strawberries air dry for an hour.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave in 30-second intervals.
Step 3: Dip the strawberry into the chocolate. Shake off the excess chocolate.
Step 4: Roll the strawberry into pistachios or shredded coconut and refrigerate for 20 minutes. Finish off the strawberries with a white chocolate drizzle and refrigerate for an hour until ready to eat.
Tips and Tricks
- Avoid using strawberries that are directly from the fridge to prevent condensation. Instead, leave the strawberries out for about 30 to 40 minutes before use.
- NEVER dip wet strawberries into chocolate. Always pat strawberries dry and place them on layers of paper towel to air dry for at least an hour. Any excess liquid will prevent the chocolate from coating the strawberry.
- Remove the excess chocolate by shaking the strawberry. If you choose to drag the bottom half of the strawberry along the edge of the bowl, be careful not to completely remove the chocolate or else the juices will leak out.
- Pour the melted chocolate into a wide and long cup such as a shot glass.
- Heat the chocolate in intervals of 25 to 30 seconds and stir each time with a spatula. Overheating will cause the chocolate to seize.
- If you choose to add a drizzle, refrigerate your chocolate strawberry for 20 minutes and then pour on your drizzle. My favourite method is to pour the chocolate into a zip-lock bag and cut a VERY tiny hole in the bottom corner of the zip-lock bag.
- To avoid sweaty chocolate strawberries simply place them in the refrigerator to cool. Do NOT place them in the freezer to prevent the strawberry from thawing.
Topping Variations
- Chocolate: Use dark chocolate, white chocolate, semi-sweet or milk chocolate, or coloured chocolate wafers
- Chopped nuts: Roasted pistachios, peanuts, almonds or pecans.
- Sprinkles: Nonpareils, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles or holiday-themed sprinkles.
- Additional toppings: Shredded coconut, Oreos, mini chocolate chips, edible rose petals, cookie crumbs or crushed candy canes.
- Drizzle: Melted peanut butter, Nutella or Lotus Biscoff would be AMAZING!

Homemade Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe FAQ
How long will chocolate covered strawberries last?
I reccomend leaving it in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 days. However, I highly encourage that they be enjoyed immediately.
Are there others methods to heat the chocolate?
Yes! Another easy way to melt chocolate is by using the double-boiler method. Start by boiling water in a pot, then place a heat-proof bowl over the pot on medium to low heat. Add the chocolate to the bowl and stir continuously until it completely melts, then remove the bowl from the heat. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate directly in a pan over low heat, but it’s important to stir it consistently to avoid burning..
Why should I add coconut oil before melting the chocolate?
Adding coconut oil is optional, but it helps to thin out the chocolate and create a shiny texture which is perfect for dipping strawberries into.
What is the best chocolate to use for chocolate-covered strawberries?
I prefer semi-sweet chocolate chips because they’re budget-friendly and always can be found in my pantry. While you can splurge on high-quality chocolate, I find the taste is quite similar. For variety, try using white chocolate, dark chocolate, or colourful chocolate wafers instead!
