Honey Vanilla Matcha Latte

Enjoy a piping hot cup of matcha latte with a subtle hint of honey and vanilla to warm you up in the comfort of your own home! Matcha lattes from Starbucks have been my go-to drink for years, but the cost of $6 lattes started to add up quickly. So I was determined to use reasonably priced ingredients to achieve a rich and smooth matcha latte. And guess what? This recipe achieved just that! This comforting matcha latte is perfect during those frigid Canadian winter days, especially during flu season. The antioxidant properties in matcha combined with the warm honey create the ideal drink to soothe a sore throat. Enjoy being your barista, and let me know what you think. Enjoy!

  • Matcha: Since matcha is the main star in this recipe, choose a high quality matcha powder like ceremonial or culinary grade matcha (scroll below for the matcha link that I use).
  • Milk: Dairy or plant-based milk can be used (coconut milk creates a rich and thick latte.
  • Water: For a thicker matcha latte, replace the required amount of water with milk. However, adding water can help to dilute the matcha if desired.
  • Honey: I love using honey as a natural sweetener, and it’s perfect to use in a warm latte due to its anti-inflammatory benefits. But for a vegan alternative, substitute the honey for maple syrup or coconut sugar.
  • Vanilla extract: Use a good quality vanilla extract to enhance the vanilla taste.
  • Vanilla syrup: Sugar-free vanilla syrup is my favourite way to enhance the vanilla in this latte without drastically increasing the sugar content. If you prefer a sweeter latte, opt for a regular vanilla syrup.

What is the difference between ceremonial and culinary grade matcha

Ceremonial grade is the highest quality of matcha that is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s pricier compared to culinary-grade matcha but since ceremonial matcha is more vibrant and less bitter, the cost is definitely worth it if you’re a matcha fanatic. The other type is culinary grade matcha which is a lower grade of matcha and is usually less expensive. Culinary grade can be used for all culinary purposes and for smoothies or lattes. Personally, I always opt for using culinary grade matcha due to its versatility and cost.

Recommended products that I personally use

Jade Leaf Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder (Very reasonably priced and the matcha tastes really fresh, definitely the best bang for your buck)

Milk Frother Handheld (I love this milk frother since the price is reasonable and it also includes an attachable whisk)

Torani Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup

(By purchasing products through the above links, I will not receive any form of compensation and have only attached the links solely for your convenience)

Step 1: In a pot, combine water and milk over medium heat. Let the milk and water mixture heat up but do NOT let it come to a boil.

Step 2: Reduce the heat to low and add the matcha powder and use a handheld frother or whisk to combine.

Step 3: Remove the pot from the heat and add honey, vanilla extract and sugar-free vanilla syrup as desired.

  • 2 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon sugar free vanilla syrup

Instructions

  • In a pot combine the milk and water over medium heat and simmer until warm, but do not boil.
2 cups milk, 1 cup water
  • Once the milk and water are warm reduce the heat to low, add the matcha and use a handheld frother to incorporate the matcha (Note: matcha can be put through a sieve to reduce lumps).
    2 teaspoon matcha powder
  • Turn off the heat and add vanilla extract, honey and sugar free vanilla syrup.
2 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon sugar free vanilla syrup
  • Pour into your mug and enjoy!

Notes

  • Sugar free vanilla syrup is not required but I highly recommend it for that added Starbucks matcha feel.
  • For a smooth, lump-free matcha latte, pour the matcha into a strainer over the cup.
  • I recommend high-quality matcha for a vibrant green colour taste. Ceremonial grade matcha is significantly less bitter and will require less sweetener.
  • An alternative method is to heat the milk and water in a heat-safe mug or Pyrex and microwave for 1 to 2 min depending on your microwave voltage
