Easy Homemade Guacamole Recipe
If you’re searching for a quick and straightforward recipe for taco night or to enjoy with chips, this Easy Homemade Guacamole Recipe is just what you need! With only seven ingredients, you can have a delicious bowl of guacamole ready in under five minutes!
- While authentic guacamole is usually prepared using a molcajete, you can still get creamy guacamole by using a masher or fork.
- This guacamole recipe uses lemon juice, but you can substitute lime juice for a more authentic flavor. If you don’t like jalapeño, feel free to replace it with green pepper for a nice crunch.
- You can prepare the guacamole a day in advance. Just place the guacamole in a container, cover it with a plastic wrap, and seal it with a lid.
- Serve the guacamole with crispy tortilla chips and fresh veggies, or use it as a topping for tacos, burritos, and more!
Ingredients
- Avocados: The best guacamole requires ripe avocados (Scroll below for some avocado tips and tricks)
- Jalapeño: Authentic guacamole uses freshly chopped jalapeño but green bell peppers are also great for an extra crunch. Alternatively, you can also just leave out the jalapeño and it still tastes incredible!
- Onions: I add red onions for a subtle hint of garlic flavour but white or green onions will be just fine.
- Tomatoes: For less watery guacamole, it’s best to use Roma tomatoes as they have a lower water content.
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro elevates the guacamole but you can choose to substitute it with fresh or dried parsley.
- Lemon juice: Either lemon or lime juice can be used.
- Salt: Use flaky sea salt, kosher salt or table salt
How To Make Guacamole
Step 1: To prepare the avocados, start by slicing them in half. Then, gently remove the pit and either scoop out the flesh with a spoon or peel the avocado and add it to a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Add the lemon juice and salt to the avocados and mash together with a fork while leaving a few chunks for texture.
Step 3: Dice the tomatoes, pepper, onion and cilantro. Add it into the mixing bowl and fold it until combined. At this stage add more salt or lemon juice as needed.
Step 4: When you’re ready to enjoy, serve it up right away or pop it in the fridge covered with plastic wrap. This guacamole is perfect for making tacos, burrito bowls, or using as a dip for your favourite tortilla chips.

Easy Homemade Guacamole Recipe FAQ
How do I check if an avocado is ripe?
To keep your avocados fresh longer, store them in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to use them, take them out a day or two ahead and let them ripen on the counter. If you want to speed up the ripening process, try throwing an apple or banana in the bag. To check if the avocado is ripe, give it a gentle squeeze. It should be soft to the touch but not too squishy.
How can I store guacamole in the refrigerator?
Guacamole is delicious, but it can turn brown quickly. To keep it fresh, press the guacamole firmly into a container and drizzle a little lemon or lime juice on top. Then, cover it with plastic wrap, making sure it touches the guacamole to prevent air pockets. Seal the container with a lid and refrigerate. This easy method keeps your guacamole fresh and green for longer!
What are other ways to add more flavour to guacamole?
While I love simple guacamole, you can add fresh grated garlic or garlic powder to enhance the flavours. You can also add fresh grilled corn, chipotle peppers, chilli flakes, or sour cream to great creamy guacamole that’s packed with extra flavour!
